1/ Think Life Change - Spiritual transformation to become like the Lord Jesus is our desire, priority and goal (Colossians 1:27-2:3; 2 Cor. 3:18; 2 Peter 1:3-9; John 15:1-17). When we get to heaven we will be like the Lord Jesus. Yet even now we are on an incredible journey of life transformation! God takes us where we are right now, and, as we give him permission to run our lives, He changes us progressively into the image of Jesus. Prayer and meditation, reading God’s word, reflection and living normal daily life in His presence all enhance His work in us. Healthy fellowship, and living life to the full, is the great ground God uses to grow his people.
2/ It’s All About Relationship – We can’t change people’s lives all by ourselves but we can build a sense of community where God can work through each other to achieve his purposes in us. Introductions, outreach projects, worship, random get-togethers, regular meetings or meeting outside of groups all add to bring people together. It’s living life together not just a meeting. We want to live like the Church in Colossae, “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity,” Col. 3:12-17. God has established an intimate relationship with us and Church reflects that relationship when we step away from our walls of isolations and connect with each other.
3/ Encourage Group Involvement/Use of Spiritual Gifts – Our goal as leaders is not to lead discussion and answer all the questions the right way. We want our people to use the gifts God has given them. We want to see people gain confidence by accomplishing things they never thought they could do. Great success is often sitting quietly and enjoying someone else’s gifts. Church is not a one person show it is many people with diverse gifts adding their uniqueness. The New Testament church didn’t do lip service to this when they met, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” God gives us His dreams that He wishes to live through us and creates our lives perfectly to fulfil them. Ephesians 4:7-8, 11-16.
4/ Create Leadership – This is really the highest honour of Christian leadership - to leave in others what God has left in us. The joy of partnering with and developing people into leaders and helping them go on to lead others is unparalleled! We, together, as mature leaders, need to be on a constant lookout to find those servants and to give them space to develop. We encourage you, if at all possible, to come alongside people, who, will watch what you do, and share with them how servant leadership lives out in your own life - 2 Thessalonians 1:4-8. Training leaders is ‘the gift that keeps on giving’!
5/ Family Cares – Church is family and we are here for one another just as families should be there for one another. So, as family we need to jump all over opportunities to show tangible care when we or our people are hurting or in need. In 1 John 3: 16-19 we see this creed, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” Jesus says also that effective outreach is tied together with this truth when He remarked, “They will know you are my disciples when you love one another.”
6/ Remember the Mission – We are not here in this world to be served but to serve as Jesus did. He said to his father that, “As you have sent me into this world so I send them.” We are a sent people, a sent family and a sent group. We want to remind our people of the amazing opportunities they have in their lives to be the Lord Jesus for others who don’t know Him! And to add to our individual lives group outreach projects are a powerful symbol, of what our lives are meant to be 24/7. Has Church and small groups been only for those who are gathered at the planned hour? Has Lighthouse prayed, dreamt and intentionally executed plans to reach out and leave the safe burrow for the purpose of blessing others outside of faith? Are we bridge-builders taking the Kingdom of God from heaven to earth?
God’s church is meant to be a city on a hill that cannot be hid!
We love sharing God’s hope and love in practical and particular ways to the world outside the Church just as Jesus did.
